Burial Location

Helen Ruth Mehler (nee Roetzheim) passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at age 93.  Helen was an active member of, well -- everything!  Helen taught for 35 years at Chicago public schools, including Hearst and Dewey Child Parent Center, teaching kindergarten and Head Start programs. She also taught preschool at Christ Lutheran in Clarendon Hills.

Helen was a gifted pianist and organist at numerous churches, weddings, funerals and recitals.  She played professionally starting in her teens and continued into her 90’s.  Helen was a Lifetime Master in bridge, playing her final bridge game just a week before her death.  A true Chicagoan, she continued to be enthralled by the bustle and beauty of the city.  Helen was an active member of Union Church of Hinsdale for 60 years, serving on staff and several committees.  Helen was a phenomenal cook and hostess.  She was also a voracious reader, gardener, play-goer, movie-watcher, Chicago Symphony Orchestra attendee and docent, among other activities.  Helen loved to travel and went on numerous trips to various parts of the world, including with her children and grandchildren. She was passionate about supporting political candidates who would better our world.  She was generous with her time, money, compliments, encouragement, and love.

Helen received a full academic scholarship for her undergraduate studies at Augustana College in Rock Island, where she earned two bachelor's degrees. She later earned a master’s degree from Northwestern University in Evanston and did further post-graduate work at Roosevelt University.

Beyond her activities, she was a great lady, true friend and mentor to many, and a loving and supportive mother and grandmother.

Helen is survived by her four daughters: Christine (Paul) Kazmar, Lynn (Ken) Kubat, Patricia, and Kathryn (Ken) Johns; six grandchildren: Dr. Aimée Berliner, Kimberly Berliner, Gregory (Malissa) Johns, Hannah (Dustin) Wittmayer, Steven Johns, and Sarah Kubat, and her favorite sister-in-law, Betty Jo Roetzheim.  She is survived by too many friends to list without bankrupting her estate from the print costs.   Helen was preceded in death by her father, William G. Roetzheim, her mother, Margie (Haese) Roetzheim, and her brother, William H. Roetzheim.

Helen supported numerous charities regularly, quite literally putting her money where her mouth was.  In lieu of flowers, the family has chosen two of her favorites for memorial donations:  Union Church of Hinsdale – Angola Project and Augustana College in Rock Island.

A memorial service to honor our amazing Helen will be held on Sunday, August 12th at 3:00 p.m. at Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 South Garfield, Hinsdale.
