Robert G. Dederick of Hinsdale, Illinois died after a long battle with cancer on January 19, 2016. He was born in Keene, New Hampshire on November 18, 1929. The son of Frederic and Margaret Dederick, he attended Harvard University where he received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. While at Harvard, he met his wife-to-be, Margarida Magalhaes, a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty.
His many years in Chicago cemented Dederick’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading economists. In addition to serving as Chief Economist of Chicago’s Northern Trust Corporation, Dederick was granted a special leave of absence to assume a key position created especially for him by President Ronald Reagan, Undersecretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs. A highly respected economist, he was granted the William B. Butler Memorial Award for “Excellence in Business Economics”. In his later years, working as a consultant, he spoke at numerous conferences, providing advice to investors. He was regularly quoted in the news media, especially at times of financial turmoil.
With his wife, Dederick owned a home on Cape Cod where he spent the summer surrounded by his children, grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. A long-time member of the Hinsdale Golf Club, he enjoyed playing golf, reading and spending time with friends and family.
Dederick leaves behind his sons Frederic and Peter (Cheryl), his daughter Laura (Alter), son-in-law Scott Alter, his grandchildren Christopher, Charlie, Catherine and Bobby, his sister Elizabeth (Fisher), all blessed with his love. He will be remembered as a kind and compassionate man with a witty, self-deprecating humor.
Visitation will be Friday, January 22 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Adolf Funeral Home, 7000 S. Madison, Willowbrook. Friends will meet Saturday, January 23 at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 306 W. Fourth, Hinsdale for a 10:00 AM funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to Hinsdale Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 130, Hinsdale, IL 60522-0130 or to Catholic Relief Services, 228 W.
